3 Tips For Successfully Working With A Divorce Attorney

by Richard Ramirez

If you are currently going through a divorce, and have decided that you would like to work with a divorce attorney, then there are a few things that you are going to want to keep in mind. This article will discuss 3 tips for successfully working with a divorce attorney.

Know What You Want Before You Begin

Before you ever begin looking for a divorce attorney, it is important that you know what you want. Have it figured out in your head what you want in terms of your combined assets, child support, as well as what type of custody you would ideally like to have. This makes it easier for you to find a divorce attorney that is going to provide you with what you want because you can ask them right up front if this is something that they are going to be able to help you with.

Keep Your Emotions In Check

One thing that you must realize is that your divorce attorney is not your therapist. They are not there to listen to you go on and on for hours about how you were wronged in your divorce and all of the emotional turmoil that it put you through. Your divorce attorney likely doesn't want to hear all of this, especially if it isn't pertinent to your case. Also, the longer you spend with your lawyer dwelling on these emotional issues, the more you are going to have to pay them. And considering this isn't time well spent in terms of strengthening your case, it is a big waste of your money and their time. Instead, keep your emotions in check and work through them with either family members or a therapist. That way, when you are with your divorce attorney, all time will be spent working on your case.

Be Realistic

While your divorce attorney is going to be able to help you a great deal when it comes to preparing your case and defending you in court, they aren't a fix-all. They have to follow all legal procedures that you would have to follow, and they can't make all of your divorce problems go away. From the beginning, you should ask them what they are going to be able to do for you in terms of assets, custody of your children, etc. This will help you to know what to expect and will allow you to have the most realistic expectations possible.

About Me

Make A Great Impression In The Courtroom

Hello, I'm Phillip Kerr and I just love the legal profession and courtroom drama. Have you ever watched judge shows on TV? I know that these shows are not an accurate representation of the courtroom, but there is something you may have noticed. Some individuals come into the courtroom well-dressed, articulate, respectful and with the knowledge and documents necessary to support a case, while others come unprepared, slovenly dressed and appear as if they do not have a care in the world. How you present yourself and the knowledge that you have of the law will have an impact on how you are treated, even if you have legal representation. This blog is designed to assist those who are going to trial in doing just that.
